How can I run a game optimized for 256 bit on a modern laptop?

I used to play this bombass game called Return Fire when I was a tyke and I'm trying to run it on my new laptop. It asks me to set my mode to 256 colors. I go to my graphics properties and it's not there. Am I missing something or can my laptop genuinely not run the game?How can I run a game optimized for 256 bit on a modern laptop?Right click on the game icon then property then compatibility then put a mark on 256 then apply.
