There's hundreds of books out there that have stories taking place in the Star Trek universe - in all the various incarnations. Enterprise, The Original Series, Lost Era, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Excalibur, etc etc...

Then there's "The Pandora Principle", "Mosaic", "The Eugenics Wars", all three pretty darn good.
As a new, stand-alone series you should read Peter Davids "New Frontier" books. Absolutely loved it!
Generally, Peter David, Christie Golden and Greg Cox are easliy the best authors in the Star Trek Universe.

My favorite Star Trek book was the Next Generation one called Imzadi. I love anything with a bit of romance in it :-)
