What is that single bright star in the pasadena sky?

I am located in Pasadena, and usually we can only see several stars. There is one star that i believe is a to the south west that is just very bright and visible. What is this? is it a star? a planet? a satellite? i cant tell if it twinkles or not. but it super bright. thanks for the help.

just in case: no its not the moon...What is that single bright star in the pasadena sky?It is the planet Venus. Jupiter will be the second brightest star. Venus and Jupiter are both at one of their closest points to Earth in their ellipse orbit. Jupiter will vanish quite soon, by the beginning of January and Venus will vanish by March. Mars is on the other side of the Sun. :)What is that single bright star in the pasadena sky?
More than likely you are seeing Venus. Check out this article for an interesting celestial show tomorrow night:

Venus. It's the brightest object in the Sky after the Sun and Moon. For several months it appears in the WEstern sky after sunset and Eastern sky before Sunrise. The rest oif the time it's in daylight. In ancient times it was thought to be 2 seperate objects and was named Hesperus and Phosphorous. Even now some people refer to Venus as the "morning" or evening" star although it's not a star at all. What is that single bright star in the pasadena sky? It's Venus. My dh is into astronomy and drags me outside to look.

December 31st there will be a double conjunction: a Moon-Venus conjunction and a Jupiter-Mercury conjunction. Here is a website with info: http://www.visualastronomy.com/2008/12/n鈥?/a>

That's Venus, currently the evening star.
The Planet that you are seeing is the planet Venus. It is located in the sought west sky beside the crescent Moon, Venus is very bright right now.
